What is the MESA Program?

MESA is the SGEA’s Medical Education Scholarship Award program. It was established in 2003 to promote and recognize achievements in educational scholarship demonstrated by active members of the SGEA from SGEA member schools. Presenters who wish to be considered for an award receive reviews organized by MESRE. At the annual SGEA meeting, the following awards are given:

  • Poster awards
    • Best poster by a trainee
    • Best poster overall, non-trainee
  • Oral presentation awards for each of the categories listed below. These can be workshops, small group discussions, oral research presentations, or demonstrations.
    • Undergraduate Medical Education
    • Graduate Medical Education
    • Continuing Medical Education
    • Research in Medical Education

Would you like to be a MESA reviewer?

Would you like to serve as reviewer for presentations that are eligible for a 2018 Medical Education Scholarship Award (MESA)? Besides providing a valuable service to SGEA, it can also help familiarize you with the process and judging criteria if you (or one of your colleagues) would like to be considered for a MESA award at an upcoming meeting. This is an excellent opportunity to get more involved with SGEA and with MESRE. Here is how it works:

  • We provide a brief online review of the reviewer process and forms for you to complete prior to the meeting.
  • Most reviewers have 3-5 reviews on their schedule (unless they volunteered for more). Typically these are for sessions you had already hoped to attend. These can include (coming soon).
  • The review form is short and can be completed on paper or electronically.
  • Shortly before the conference, we will send you a list of the reviews you agreed to do, as well as where and when they are occurring.
  • At the conference, when you check in, a reviewer packet will be waiting for you with your review schedule and instructions.
  • Reviews are completed on site and submitted electronically or turned in to the registration table.
